Dropships are not to be confused with airborne armored personnel carriers (APC), like the Halo saga's Pelican, or the Alien(s) saga's UD-4L Cheyenne (which are VTOL-crafts based on fusions of the CH-46 Sea Knight, CH-47 Chinook, and V-22 Osprey).

Although typically outfitted with extensive defensive and offensive systems, dropships primarily serve as moderate range sensory platforms, and as shelters during inclement weather.
Capable of being hermetically sealed for many months at a time (or longer, in the case of FOBian / Inisfreean technology), dropships are also suitable quarantine constructs, whether one wants to keep the contaminated in them or out.
