Historical Logical Note
Like the transition from vacuum tubes to microchips, we will transition again from magnetic and laser engraving on discs to synthetic crystals and light matrices. We already switched from electronic to photonic, and from radio to microwave. Submarines switched to E.L.F. (Extremely Low Frequency). And if you have read Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game", you'll know what I'm talking about when I say we will switch from microwave transmissions to ansible technology and cellular-sized devices, as well. It seems far fetched now, but only due to what we are used to. If you tried to convince someone a century ago that you could look at anywhere in the world or outer space through a high-definition, color television or computer monitor as thin as a magazine, and that we would soon communicate trillions of computations every second through invisible energy beams (radio and microwaves) bouncing off of machines we put into orbit, they would probably see that as far-fetched and insane for the very same reason.
