Travel Advisory:  All starships passing through or near any asteroid belt must factor in belt-swell (similar to wave-cresting); the amount of volume in Space a given asteroid belt will expand (swell) and contract based on where passing stars, planets, planetoids, and comets are.

If a star orbiting another star is passing, with the asteroid belt in between these two stars, belt-swell will occur, causing asteroid-storms due to the slow expansion of the belt as it is pulled between the two nearing stars, then by the increasing expansion of the belt as the stars reach their nearest mutual proximity, and then by the decreasing rate of the contraction of the belt as the stars move out of their positions on opposing sides of the same point of the belt.

Although the star the asteroid belt orbits will maintain a general set rate of gravitational force upon the belt, the other star(s) orbiting the main star will also exert a generally set rate of gravitation force near them.  This results in any affected asteroid belt remaining slightly stretched out between the main and orbiting stars, and slightly thinner and denser when the subordinate stars are not orbiting by.

This solar-orbit-seasonal gravitational fluctuation influencing the dimensions of the local segment of any asteroid belt leads to asteroid-storms because the expansion and contraction of the belt causes collisions and altered trajectories within and out from each belt.

This is important to factor in to any flight plan because most solar systems have asteroid belts, as well as Kuiper belts, scattered discs, Oort clouds, and rogue bodies, many of which have significant enough gravity to require sudden corrective piloting to compensate for their passing.  This is especially true during asteroid-storms, when turbulent asteroid field activity results in nearly unpredictable and incalculable gravity field interactions from each of the larger bodies.

Solar seasons (when sunspots/star-spots and solar-flares change their frequency, dimensions, and output) affect belt-swell and asteroid-storms even more.  Always make sure your sensory and calendar equipment and applications are up-to-date and fully functional before making an interplanetary trip past, near, or through any asteroid belt, even with Repulsine-based craft.

Notes:

Jiangyin was a Border world and very much like a dozen other Border worlds throughout the system. However, the culture that had arisen on this planet was somewhat different than on other planets. A distinct separation existed between the citizens who lived in the established towns, and those who had made their lives in the hills. The hill people had become a very superstitious lot, and often their villages were not self-sufficient. To compensate for this, they were known to kidnap skilled tradespeople from the towns, whether they be citizens of Jiangyin or come from off-world. These tradespeople were put to work for the hill folk, whether moved by the plight of these less fortunate, or, more frequently, convinced through threat of violence.

Notes:

The world of Greenleaf has a large tropical belt, creating massive jungles and rainforests. Tropical plants provide a variety of life-saving drugs that cannot easily be synthesized in a laboratory. Major drug companies set up shop on Greenleaf, providing the bulk of work for the locals.

Some of Greenleaf's residents, seeing the enormous profits that were being made, began to make 'clippings' of pharmaceutical plants and grow them privately to sell on the black market. The problem became so great that the drug companies began engineering new plant strains with traceable genetic tags, so that the confiscated merchandise could be traced back to the origin point. The technique has not yet led to any major arrests, mostly because there are dozens of small cartels, and they are difficult to track down in the jungle.

Notes:

The Alliance is aware of the drug-smuggling problem out on Greenleaf, and they are clamping down on enforcement. Landing is more restricted on Greenleaf than on other Rim worlds, though smugglers who know the jungle can always find ways to sneak through.

Notes:

One of the coldest planets in the 'Verse, St. Albans has a terrain that is almost entirely mountainous. What really makes St. Albans' a whole lot of unpleasant is the gorram weather, for it snows almost continually. The entire planet is covered in drifts, even during what some laughingly call summer.

The people here are a hardy folk. The principal work is mining the world's rich mineral deposits. The Consortium's not interested due to the harsh climate. The planet is divided into claims that the inhabitants prospect for whatever they can find.

Theirs is a tough and lonely life, so the folk there have developed a very strong community. If you offend one of them, you have offended all of them. The reverse is also true, however: if you make one friend on St. Albans, the entire community will look out for you.
